Jazz Brunch with North Country Hollow!

Catskills/MidHudson Valley region of New York State. Formed in 2022, the trio celebrates their appreciation for traditional/timeless song craft and acoustic instrumentation. Singing lead vocals and playing guitar, Pete Newman approaches songs that could easily be considered dated time capsules of a bygone era with an un-ironic sincerity, while his guitar playing follows in the tradition and footsteps of his flatpick guitar idols, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, and Clarence white. On the fiddle is Evan Shultis, who’s music career started at a young age playing square dances in and around the Catskill Mountains where he acquired his authentic Appalachian sound. He also grew up playing under the wing of local bluegrass legends such as Bill Keith and others. With a deep talent for harmony and improvisation, Evan is an ace of a side man in any outfit he’s found in. Playing acoustic bass is Chris Macchia. A bit of a local legend himself, Chris might be the most hired bass player in Ulster county in the last 20 years. And his reputation precedes him and his sound and playing, which is as reliable as it is creative. Chris is indeed another ace of a side man. Together, they present and explore such songs that range from classic bluegrass and folk numbers, to fiddle tunes, to more modern song writers, as well as some songs from jazz and pop genres played in their string band setting. Though North Country Hollow comes to the stage with a repertoire largely comprised of traditional songs, they do not seek to reinvent the musical wheel that is bluegrass and folk, but merely to give it a little grease and show that it is still a viable mode for storytelling and creativity.
